How to create a course in Sensei LMS
Creating courses in Sensei LMS is very easy. The first thing that you need to do is install the plugin. You can either use the free version of the plugin or if you have Sensei Pro you can use that. With the free version, you can create courses but you’ll miss out on several important features like the advanced quiz builder, WooCommerce integration, video course template, drip content, etc.
Once you install and activate Sensei LMS, on your WordPress dashboard you’ll see a setup wizard. This setup wizard will initially help you set up your eLearning site. Once you finish the setup wizard, you’ll be led to the Sensei LMS option on your WordPress dashboard. Here, from the quick links, you can click “Create a course”. Or you can go to Sensei LMS > Courses and click the “Create a course” option on top.
This will start the course creation sequence where you can add your course name and description, choose course layout style and select the course outline style. If you have Sensei Pro you can use AI to generate course outlines for you.
Next you’ll see the course builder where you can add modules and populate those with lessons. We have a detailed tutorial on how to create a course with Sensei LMS. You can check that out to learn more. We also have a video on this topic, if you rather want to watch a video, you can check that out.
How to create quizzes using Sensei LMS
Now that we know what Sensei LMS is and how to create a course with it, let’s learn how to add some quizzes to it. There are more than one ways to add questions. You can start creating questions from the Questions section in Sensei LMS, you can add questions by using the “Lesson with quiz” layout, and you can also use the Question and Quiz block added by Sensei LMS.
Opening the quiz builder
You can easily create quizzes by navigating to Sensei LMS > Questions. Here you’ll find all the questions that you’ve created. Again, you can create a new question by clicking the “New Question” button. This will open up the quiz builder and you can select a category and create the question you want.
However, that’s not the only way to create a Sensei LMS quiz as we’ve mentioned earlier.
You can also create questions during the course creation. Usually, you create a course in Sensei LMS by adding modules, and then adding lessons within that module. When you want to edit a lesson, select it from the course builder and you should see an option “Save to edit lesson”. Click on it, and wait a few seconds.
After it’s saved, you can now edit any lessons that you’ve added to this course. Just select the lesson you want to edit, and a new section should pop up. Click the “Edit lesson” link to edit the lesson. Now you can add content within the lesson including questions and quizzes.
Now to add questions or quizzes, you can use Gutenberg blocks added by Sensei LMS. To access the blocks, you can click on the ‘+’ icon on top left corner of the screen and find the Question or Quiz block.
There’s a difference between these blocks. It’s important to know the difference.
- Question: This block allows you to add only one question in one section.
- Quiz: This block allows you to add multiple questions in one section.
Again, when you’re editing a lesson, you’ll be asked to choose a layout for your lesson page. You’ll be given a list of options. From this list, you can choose the “Lesson with Quiz” option.
This will generate a Quiz block within your lesson. Although you already know how to add the Quiz block, this is also a fast way to start adding quizzes to your lesson.
Now you know the different ways through which you can open up the quiz builder. Using any of these methods you can create questions or quizzes for your courses. If you want to add multiple questions in one lesson, use the Quiz block. If you want to add only one question then use the Question block.
There are multiple Sensei LMS quiz categories. After you create the Question or Quiz block, select it. Then you should see a block editor option on top. From here you can see the Multiple Choice is already selected. Click on it and you should see a list of quiz types. We will go through all the quiz types and understand how they work.
Multiple Choice
The first category that we see is Multiple Choice. It will be selected by default. Normally, the multiple/single choice questions are common quiz types seen on online courses. Here, you can write a question and provide multiple options to that question. There can be one or more correct answers from those options.
First you can add a question title. This is the question. Then you can add a question description, but it is optional. You can also add images or other blocks here as well.
By clicking “Add Answer” you can add more options to this quiz. From the right-hand side you can choose the correct answer from all the options. If you want, you can have one right answer. In that case this will be a single choice question. But if you want you can make two or more options the correct answer (multiple choice).
True/False
The next quiz type that we’ll look at is the True/False. You can use a quiz block if you want and add in multiple questions in the same lesson.
For true or false, the strategy is very simple. You write a statement and then you’ll find two options, true or false. Select the correct option and you’ll be done with the quiz.
Gap Fill
Gap fill or fill in the blank is a popular question type that we’ve all faced. Sensei LMS quizzes also have this category and allow you to create questions of this type.
First you can write your question on the top. Here you can add in your question like “Fill in the gap with the correct answer” or anything similar to that. Then you have to place your question in the appropriate lines. You can see an example in the following screenshots.
Here we want the question to appear as “WordPress is an ___ content management system”. (The answer in the gap will be “open source”.)
Below the question you’ll see two lines “Text before the gap” and “Text after the gap”. So we place the word “WordPress is an” in the “Text before the gap” line and the rest of the texts (“content management system“) in the “Text after the gap” line. You also have to put the correct answer in the middle.
After writing the question and also adding the correct answer that’s supposed to be in the gap or blank part, you can save your question. So that is how you can create a gap fill question in Sensei LMS.
Single Line
The single line question allows you to write a question and students can answer in a single line. Then you also have to write the correct answer. You have to be careful here because the answer that you’ve selected should match exactly with what the students will write. So the question has to be direct. In the question description you can guide the students how to answer this question.
Again, the answer that the students write must match exactly with what you’ve typed in the answer bar. Only then the student’s answer will be deemed as the correct answer.
Multi Line
Similar to single line, the multi line is a question type that allows your students to write broad answers to questions. As you can imagine there are some answers to questions that require a lot of explanation. The multi line quiz type can help in this regard.
Since the multi line quiz type doesn’t have any character limit, this can be used for short answers as well. What do we mean by this? Well, the single line answer is a good question type, but the problem is, the answer has to match exactly with what you’ve typed in the answer bar. But for multi line, how can the LMS decide if the answer is right or wrong?
Well, how this works is quite interesting. The students will read the question and write their answers in the input box. Then click on the “Submit” button. Now the answer to this question made by the particular student will be submitted in the backend. The teacher can then read the answer and decide if it’s right or wrong.
Ordering (Sensei LMS Pro Only)
Now if you’re using Sensei LMS Pro, then you can use the Ordering question type. Here you can write your question and add options to that question. Now these options must be rearranged in a certain order for the answer to be correct. To create an Ordering question, first select the Ordering type question. Then write your ordering question.
After that you can add the options and rearrange those in the correct order. The students will see these in a random order. They have to reorder the options to the correct sequence.
File Upload
The file upload question type allows your students to upload a file containing their answer. The file can be uploaded by clicking on the “Choose File” button.
Students can upload images, documents, audio, and video files. Basically students can upload file types accepted by WordPress. If you want students to upload their answers in a particular file type (such as pdf, doc, pptx, etc.) you can also mention that in the question description.
Conclusion
So that is our tutorial on Sensei LMS quiz. Now you know how you can create quizzes with Sensei LMS. You already know the benefits of using different types of quiz categories. Now go ahead and make your course more engaging and fun. With Sensei LMS, you can also add certificates to your courses. This will encourage students and also give them a sense of accomplishment.
