How to Create a Certificate with Sensei LMS

Sensei LMS is a plugin that helps you create a complete online education website. You can create courses and sell those courses on your WordPress website. It also has a certificate maker that allows you to design and build your own course certificate. In this post, we’re going to learn how you can create and add that certificate to your course. So when students complete your Sensei LMS course, they’ll receive these certificates.

What is Sensei LMS?

How to create a certificate with Sensei LMS

Sensei LMS has a free version and paid version as well. In the free version you can create as many courses as you want. It also gives you access to the certificate creator. But the limitation is that you’ll not be able to sell courses through WooCommerce. However, if you just want to create certificates, you can use the free version.

If you want to create your own certificates in Sensei LMS, you can use the Sensei LMC Certificates plugin. This is a free plugin from Automattic and can be downloaded from your WordPress Dashboard. Just go to Plugins > Add New Plugin and search for Sensei LMS Certificates. Install and activate the plugin and you should see the “Certificates” menu item on your WordPress dashboard.

You will find 3 options within Certificates:

• Certificates: Lists all the certificates you’ve created.
• Add New Certificate: Allows you to create a new certificate.
• Certificate Templates: Allows you to use certain templates for your certificate and also you can add a template yourself.

You can design the certificate yourself, or you can use a template. There is a default template available for the certificates. If you don’t want to create the certificate yourself, then you can use this template instead.

Using the default certificate template

The certificate templates can be found in Certificates > Certificate Templates. Here you can also add your own certificate template. But first, let’s see how you can use the templates. To use a template, edit one of your courses. On the right sidebar, select the Course tab. Here you’ll find the Certificate Template option. Click the dropdown and select the “Example Template”.

To check how this template looks, exit your course builder and go to Certificates > Certificate Templates from your WordPress dashboard.

You can also edit the template if you want. You can use a different background image, place the elements (heading, course, message, etc.) anywhere on the certificate body. If you scroll down, you can also edit the certificate data.

Creating your own certificate template

If you want, you can also create your own certificates based on your template. For this, you can create your own template. That means you have to design your own certificate background. You can use software like Photoshop and Illustrator to design the background image. You can also use online applications like Canva for this purpose.

Here are the Image Guidelines from Sensei LMS documentation:

• Supported image formats: PNG, JPG/JPEG.
• Recommended image resolution: 1200 x 675px – Higher resolutions will work, but they will be scaled down and may lose quality.
• Recommended image DPI: 72 – Higher DPIs will work, but they will be scaled down and may lose quality.

Once you’ve created the background image, you can upload it by clicking the “Set certificate image” option by going to Certificates > Certificate Templates > Add New Certificate Template.

After you’re satisfied with the background image, you can now proceed to place all the important elements. If you scroll down, you’ll find the certificate data area. Here you can choose the font for your certificate elements and also apply font style such as bold, italic, center align, and border. You can change the color of the fonts as well.

Here are the elements that you might want to add to your certificate:

• Heading: A heading text for your certificate. You can write something like “Certificate of Completion” here.
• Message: This is the message which says something like “This is to certify that this learner has completed this course”.
• Course: This is the name of the course.
• Place: This is the name of your site.

You can also write the text that will be displayed on the certificates. For all the certificate data, there’s the text field. You can write your own text here.

Note: You can also add dynamic data. Here’s a list of the dynamic data that you can use:

• {{learner}} – The display name of the user or learner.
• {{course_title}} – This will display the title of the course that has been completed.
• {{completion_date}} – The date the course was completed by the learner.
• {{course_place}} – The name of your WordPress site. It’s taken from the WordPress Settings.

So don’t forget to use these dynamic data or placeholders wherever it’s necessary.

Once you’re done with the settings, simply click the “Set Position” button of the data you want to place in your certificate. You can drag and drop the elements and also resize those quite easily.

After you’re done, click the “Publish” button. You can also click the “Preview” button to see how your certificate looks. Although you won’t see any data, it will still give you an idea of how the certificate will look like.

That’s how you can create a certificate in Sensei LMS. You already know how you can set this certificate to a course. Simply edit the course where you want to add this certificate, and select the Course tab. Then from the “Certificate Template” dropdown, select the certificate you just created.

Certificate settings

To access the certificate settings, navigate to Sensei LMS > Settings there you’ll see the Certificate Settings with a few options.

• View in course: When enabled, it will display a View Certificate link on the single course page and the My Courses page.
• View in Learner Profile: When enabled, it will display the View Certificate link on the Learner Profile page.
• Public Certificate: When enabled, students will be allowed to share the certificate with the public.
• Delete data on uninstall: If enabled, it will delete Sensei Certificate data when the plugin is deleted. Usually it’s a good idea not to enable this option as the data cannot be recovered.

By default the first 3 options will be enabled and the 4th option will be disabled. It is best to leave the certificate settings as it is, but if you want to change it, you can do so.
