How to Export and Import Quiz in Tutor LMS

Looking to export quizzes from a Tutor LMS course? Or do you want to import quizzes to your Tutor LMS course to save time? In this post, we’re going to learn how to Import or Export quizzes in Tutor LMS. We are also going to discuss what you need in order to do this because there are prerequisites.
Tutor LMS is a powerful WordPress Learning Management System or LMS plugin. It helps you create stunning eLearning or online education platforms using the power of WordPress. You can create detailed courses with topics, lessons, quizzes, assignments, etc. One of the benefits of using Tutor LMS is that you don’t have to worry about how you’re going to design your courses. Tutor LMS has already created a structure for your course. You just need to add your course details such as course title, description, featured image, course intro video, prerequisites, materials, who is this course for, course curriculum, etc.
With Tutor LMS you can create different types or categories of quizzes. Tutor LMS also provides you with options to export and import quizzes. This means you can reuse existing quiz materials and use it for other courses on other Tutor LMS sites. This will save you a lot of time as you don’t have to go and create quizzes from scratch. In this post, we’re going to learn how you can accomplish this.
Overview of quiz features in Tutor LMS
In the past we’ve discussed many Tutor LMS features. We also learned how to create quizzes in Tutor LMS using the quiz builder. There are 8 quiz types including Single Choice, Multiple Choice, True/False, Fill in the Blanks, Open Ended/ Essay, etc. When you’re building your course curriculum, you can create these quizzes and add these quizzes to your lessons.
There are advanced quiz settings which allows you to further customize your quizzes. For example, you can add a timer to give the learners a time limit for answering a quiz. You can dictate how many points each question yields. You can also specify the maximum length of the short and long answers.
After students attempt a quiz, it will be submitted in the backend. The teacher will be able to scrutinize and check all the answers submitted by the student. The tutor will also be able to mark an answer right or wrong. Some questions actually require manual marking (grading) from the tutor. Questions such as the Open Ended/Essay require manual checking as the answer can be really long and the LMS won’t be able to judge if it’s correct or not.
Why import/export quizzes?
Looking at all these quiz features from Tutor LMS, you might be wondering, why do you need to import/export quizzes? If you’ve been building courses in Tutor LMS, you might already have an answer. Here are some reasons why you might want to import/export quizzes:
- Saves time: This is the main advantage of importing/exporting quizzes. Importing quizzes allows you to quickly add all the quizzes in a course. All you have to do is simply replace the questions with the new questions for that course.
- Reuse quiz content: There might be courses that have similar quizzes. In that case, you can export those quizzes in a CSV file and then import that file for future use. In this way, you can reuse quiz content across multiple courses or websites.
- Backup and restore quiz data: With the import/export feature, you can backup and restore quiz data as well.
- Collaborate with other instructors: As sharing the quiz content becomes easier, you can collaborate with other instructors easily.
Although the process of creating these quizzes is quite simple, if you’re creating courses that have similar quiz types, it can be quite repetitive creating the quizzes manually. That’s where the quiz import/export feature shines. This can save you a lot of time and effort. After creating the quizzes of a course you can export it in a CSV file. Again, when you’re creating another course with a similar quiz pattern, you can simply import that CSV file and just change your questions.

Tutor LMS quiz CSV format breakdown
Now in case you want to edit the CSV file, you should also know the format. So here’s a breakdown of the Tutor LMS Quiz CSV format. We opened the CSV file in Google Sheets and here’s how it looks like:

Looking at the CSV file for the first time it might be confusing. But let’s break it down.
1st Row: The first row is for settings. The first row of the 2nd column is where the title of the quiz goes to and the C column is the quiz summary. The D column is for the number that represents the time limit. The E column is where you specify the minutes/hours/days/weeks for the time limit. The F column is for the hide quiz time option. If the value is set to 0, the option is disabled, if it’s set to 1 then the option is enabled.
The G column is for the quiz feedback mode. In our case the retry has been set to 10. The H column is for the passing score. It’s set to 80, which means the required passing grade is 80%. The I column is for the “Max Question Allowed to Answer”.
The next few columns of the 1st row are for the advanced settings. The J column is for the “Quiz Auto Start” option. 0 means auto start is disabled and 1 means enabled. The K column is for question layout, it can be single question, question pagination, or question below each other. The L column is for question order. It can be random, sorting, ascending, and descending.
The M column is for the “hide question number” option. Here 0 means the option is disabled and 1 means it’s enabled. Column N is the character limit for short answers and column O is character limit for Open Ended/ Essay answers.

If you observe closely, you can notice that the column running from left to right on the CSV file matches the quiz settings from top to bottom excluding the column B and C which have the quiz title and summary respectively.
2nd Row: The second row is for the question. The column D of the 2nd row shows the question type and column B is the question. Column C is the question description which is optional.
3rd row, 4th row, and following: After the question row, the following rows are for the options for the multiple choice question. These rows are called “answer”. The number of answer rows will depend on the amount of options you have for the question. On the next column, which is D, you’ll notice 0s and 1s. The option which has the correct answer will have the 1 on the D column.
Basically that is how the CSV file of the Tutor LMS quiz is set up. Using this knowledge, you can now edit the CSV file as well and import it to the topic of your course. However, as you might have guessed, the variation will change depending on the quiz type. So, if you create questions of different types, and then export the quiz, you can observe the changes in the CSV file and understand the layout.
